Directly involved: 450 adult women (30 % are women aged between 36 and 60 and 70 % are young people aged between 18 and 35) and young people (70 % women and 30 % men).Indirectly involved: approximately 2,250 families (or around 11,250 people) in the communities.
The population of the dry corridor in northern Nicaragua is affected by profound ecological and social challenges. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INIDE), 47.3% of women are self-employed, while men dominate the formal employment sector. Young people and women face numerous hurdles: a lack of training opportunities, few job offers and the high value placed on professional experience make it difficult for them to participate in the economy. At the same time, companies complain about a lack of qualifications. Another pressing problem is increasing migration within and outside the country. This is leading to families being separated and a noticeable reduction in the available workforce. At the same time, gender-based violence is increasing. In 2024 alone, 91 femicides were documented. Women and girls are particularly affected by insecurity, lack of social security and limited opportunities for economic independence. Against this backdrop, there is an urgent need for action to promote education, employment and protective measures for women and young people in the Dry Corridor.
